What it does

GitHub's own MCP server. It lets an AI agent read and change what is on GitHub through the GitHub API: browse code and files, open and review pull requests, manage issues, and look at workflow runs, within the permissions of the token you give it.

Who it’s for

Developers and teams who want their coding agent to work with GitHub repositories, issues and pull requests directly.

Install

Register the server with Claude Code. Its start command is in the repository's README:

claude mcp add github-mcp-server -- <start-command-from-the-README>
claude mcp list

Run /mcp in Claude Code to check the server is connected and see its tools.
